Various - Messin' Around Volume 5
For the latest in modern jazz dance classics, look no further than the Messin' Around series.  The long-standing club night has been instrumental in keeping the jazz spirit alive and always has its ears open for new sounds.

The latest volume of Messin' Around has all the quality you would expect, offering a variety of sounds from swing to afrobeat.  Kicking off with Palimpsest's version of the Jon Hendricks classic "I'll Bet You Thought I'd Never Find You," disc one serves up selections from some of the biggest names on the club jazz scene: Nostalgia 77 ("Wildflower"), Sleepwalker (the joyous "Ai No Tabi"), Mark Murphy ("Happy Samba"), and Plumstead Radical Club ("The Coast Is Clear").

Disc two delves a little bit deeper, with artists whose names aren't as immediately recognizable (Kasper Villaume Quintet, Claridade, The Cuzz Band) but expand the scope of the sound to include soul and funk.  Past favorites like Quasimode's "Ipe Amerelo" and "Sunshine" from Grupo X do provide a bit of familiarity.  The set closes with a live recording of "Take The High Road" by The Art Ensemble Of Camden that illustrates the relationship the club has with its artists.

This is perhaps the best of the Messin' Around compilations and essential for the modern jazzer. Much respect to Adrian Gibson and Freestyle Records for making this music available on a wide scale.
