Various - Classic Rare Groove 2
When you're searching for a great compilation, Mastercuts is a name you can trust.  For years the English company has been churning out fantastic collections covering the disco, rap, soul, funk, and house music genres.   Always blending more familiar cuts alongside long-unavailable obscurities,   their attention to detail is what sets them apart.

This 1994 release stands as one of their strongest, and an accurate reflection of the all-encompassing style of rare groove.  The classic disco/boogie element is accounted for by the Universal Robot Band's "Barely Breaking Even" and "Bump and Hustle Muisc" from Tommy Stewart.  Representing funk is the much-loved "God Made Me Funky" by the Headhunters, in perhaps its first apperance on cd.   Finally, bringing down the tempo with mellow soul are an array of unknown artists: Hi-Tension, Denise Kelly, Yasuko Agawa.  It's these cuts that offer the most satisfaction, as Kelly's "I'd Like to Get Into You" is just too great a performance to be forever relegated to history.

Simply put, this is essential listening for anyone seeking to expand their knowledge of classic black music beyond the traditional favorites.    Without a duff track over the 12 offerings, Classic Rare Groove 2 lives up to its title.
