Holding Back

David Simmons is a modern soul singer who achieved his highest profile in the late 1970s. With a style greatly influenced by Teddy Pendergrass, his early albums on Fantasy/WMOT are in-demand on the modern soul circuit.

The Philadelphia native had been a member of the Neo Experience before embarking on a solo career.  His first album, the optimistically-titled Hear Me Out, included the mellow “Will You Miss Me When I’m Gone.”   From the second album, “All I Wanna Do Is Make Love To You” became a quiet storm lost classic.  He sang with Sister Sledge on the original “All The Man I Need” but never could escape Pendergrass’s shadow and after a 1984 single he retreated from the spotlight.
