Tribute to Sonny Davenport
(Written January 14, 2002)

It is with great regret that we have to announce the passing of writer and musician Sonny Davenport on December 6, 2001 after a long illness.  A highly praised critical figure, Davenport is best known for his participation in creating some of the world's greatest disco records in association with Leroy Burgess and Gregory Carmichael.   The list of classics that he was involved in include the self-titled LPs by Logg and Dazzle, Fonda Rae's "Over Like A Fat Rat," and "Get Loose" by Aleem, all among the most sought after tunes in the resurgent "boogie" genre.   He also produced tracks for Rick James, Eddie Kendricks and Change.  His drumming style was very percussive (as exemplified on Herbie Mann's "Stomp Your Feet") and gave all of his projects an instantly identifiable sound.   He will be greatly missed.
